A salmonella outbreak tied to brown organic and cage-free eggs has sickened at least 79 people across seven U.S. states, with 21 requiring hospitalization, according to the CDC. Most of the cases were reported in California, with additional infections in Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Kentucky, Nebraska, and New Jersey. No deaths have been reported.
The outbreak has prompted a recall of 1.7 million eggs by the August Egg Company of Hilmar, California. The affected eggs were sold under multiple brand names and distributed to major retailers like Walmart, Ralphs, Safeway, and Save Mart between February 3 and May 15, 2025. Sell-by dates range from March 4 to June 19.
According to the FDA, samples taken during a facility inspection confirmed a strain of salmonella linked to those who fell ill. The August Egg Company stated it has diverted eggs from the implicated facility for pasteurization to eliminate potential pathogens and is conducting an internal review to prevent future issues.
The CDC warns consumers not to eat any recalled eggs and advises disposing of or returning them. Surfaces or items that came into contact with the eggs should be cleaned with hot, soapy water or run through the dishwasher.
This outbreak is a reminder of the hidden risks behind animal agriculture, even when labeled “organic” or “cage-free.” For a safer, more ethical, and sustainable lifestyle, consider choosing plant-based egg alternatives. It’s not just about your health—it’s about the animals, too. Let’s Support a system that doesn’t cut corners or compromise safety.
