Nearly 50,000 residents in California’s Central Coast are under a boil water advisory after coliform bacteria were discovered in the region’s drinking supply. The mandatory notice, which began on May 1, affects the “Five Cities” area—Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Oceano, Pismo Beach, and Avila Beach—serviced by the Zone 3 water system. The advisory is expected to remain in effect until at least May 4 as officials continue to investigate.
According to Newsweek reporter Anna Skinner, water samples collected on April 28 and 29 tested positive for coliform bacteria, which may indicate the presence of harmful pathogens like E. coli. While not inherently dangerous, coliforms are a red flag in water systems. The State Water Resources Control Board and local health departments have instructed residents to boil tap water for at least one minute before using it for drinking or cooking. Filtered water systems, including reverse osmosis, are not considered sufficient safeguards.
City officials, including Pismo Beach’s city manager, emphasized that even though local tests showed normal levels, they are deferring to the county’s directive out of caution. The Mayo Clinic warns that E. coli exposure can cause severe gastrointestinal distress, including diarrhea and vomiting—symptoms that can appear within a day and last over a week.
This is the first time the Lopez distribution system has faced such a crisis. The underlying cause is still under investigation, though authorities report a downward trend in contamination levels.
Boil water notices are a stark reminder of how fragile our natural and municipal water systems can be—especially in a warming, increasingly polluted world.
