In 2017, Esther faced a formidable adversary when veterinarians diagnosed her with breast cancer. Despite the dire prognosis, she underwent surgery to remove the malignant lumps. Yet, the challenge did not end there, as an unexpected stomach ulcer emerged, causing Esther immense discomfort and limiting her mobility.

Determined to alleviate her suffering and give her the best quality of life possible, Steve Jenkins and his partner, Derek Walter, embarked on a remarkable mission. They not only administered medications to treat the ulcer but also sought a groundbreaking solution: a scanner large enough for Esther, who weighed a substantial 300 kilograms. Through their dedication and the Support of countless well-wishers, they managed to raise the staggering sum of US$500,000. With this funding, they acquired an equine CT scanner, which was then generously donated to an Ontario veterinary college.

Their relentless efforts were a testament to the deep bond between Esther and her caregivers. In an interview at the time, Jenkins expressed his optimism, stating that their collective endeavors would grant them “another six, seven, eight more years together.” Esther indeed enjoyed six more years of life after her health struggles, before she departed from this world.
