Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) testified before a Senate committee today and said that wearing a mask might be more effective than a vaccine in helping to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

“I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against Covid than when I take a Covid vaccine, because the immunogenicity may be 70%. And if I don’t get an immune response, the vaccine is not going to protect me. This face mask will,” Redfield told the Senate on September 16.

Redfield’s stance contradicts statements made by President Trump, who said on ABC News that “there are a lot of people that think that masks are not good.” Pressed for a specific example, Trump said “waiters.”

Redfield told the Senate hearing that masks are “the most important, powerful public health tool we have” in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. He also added that a vaccine would take a while to be distributed, once it is ready.
