Key public health data is disappearing from US government websites, raising alarms among scientists and activists. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently removed pages containing vital HIV statistics, the Social Vulnerability Index, and the Environmental justice Index according to Bloomberg. LGBTQ youth resources also went missing, all seemingly erased under the directives of a new Trump administration order.
On Friday evening, CDC pages that once housed crucial HIV data returned only error messages, stating, “The page you’re looking for was not found.” Scientists and public health experts quickly began archiving what they could, fearing further removals. The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) issued a strong warning: “The removal of HIV- and LGBTQ-related resources from the websites of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health agencies is deeply concerning and creates a dangerous gap in scientific information and data to monitor and respond to disease outbreaks.”
The removals follow an executive order signed by President Donald Trump titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” Under its directives, federal agencies were ordered to scrub public-facing content that “promotes gender ideology.” This included taking down websites, social media accounts, and even disabling pronoun preferences in email systems. The US Census Bureau also experienced disruptions, with some of its sexual orientation and gender identity pages going dark before being restored.
Beyond its blatant targeting of LGBTQ individuals, this move could have widespread public health consequences. The removal of data on HIV and social vulnerability weakens the ability of health professionals to track outbreaks, direct resources, and save lives. Without access to these insights, efforts to combat infectious diseases and environmental health threats will suffer.
Silencing science and erasing vital public health information is not just a political maneuver—it’s a reckless disregard for human lives. If we value transparency and public health, we must demand accountability. Now is the time to push for data protection laws and safeguard scientific integrity before more information disappears.
