In Athens, Greece a spectacularly chunky street cat named Titan has become a tourist attraction. With 35 five-star reviews (and counting), the well-fed feline has captured the hearts of visitors. Listed as a “Tourist attraction in Athens, Greece ” on Google Maps, Titan lives in Ragava Olive Grove, close to Athens’ city center. There, locals have constructed shelters to help street cats avoid the summer heat.
Titan is also well-fed by friendly humans if his size is anything to go on. Many of his visitors also seem to bring him treats if one review stating “entry is donation based…doesn’t say the amount online but 1-3 cat treats seems reasonable” is to be believed. All the reviews left for Titan are glowing, although several dissuade people from trying to pet him as he does not seem to enjoy it. Something that Titan does appear to enjoy is naps. Many visitors have commented that they found him “lounging” in the shade with some feline friends.
Described as “the highlight of a week in Athens” it is heartwarming to see so many people enthralled with this “absolute unit” of a cat. However, street cats often live short, hard lives. Greece, where Titan lives, has one of the largest populations of stray cats and dogs in the world. These creatures may succumb to disease, malnutrition, or infections. Additionally, they are particularly vulnerable to mistreatment by humans. They may be victims of brutal population control tactics. Additionally, they may be mistreated in other horrifying ways. While Titan is a star attraction, many other felines are not treated with the same kindness. Hopefully, this chunky cat can inspire people to show care and kindness to street cats worldwide.
