Because Animals is the first pet food company to sell mouse cat treats without having to harm mice.

The CEO of Because Animals, Shannon Falconer, doesn’t eat meat, which motivated this industry switch. She is a former Stanford microbiologist and longtime animal rescue volunteer. One of her goals has been to create pet foods that still supply what their carnivore diet needs without the cruel and unnecessary slaughtering of animals.

Because Animals is bringing their Harmless Hunt Cultured Mouse Cat Treats to SuperZoo, one of the biggest trade shows in the pet food industry. The cat treats are made out of mice stem cells that have been grown in a food-grade bioreactor. The process does not involve the killing of any mice. Cells are taken from donor mice by putting them under anesthetic while their ear is pierced to collect cells. Falconer clarified that the donor mice were all adopted and are now living out their lives as very happy pets.

With most cell-based meats being for human consumption, Because Animals’ new treats are a groundbreaking product when it comes to cruelty-free pet food. They have already raised over $6.7 million from investors and plan on growing their pet food range to include more options.

When talking about vegan food options, Falconer said, “We can always use more, and I am happy when there are even more alternatives. But there was absolutely nothing for my cats and virtually nothing for dogs.”

The pet food market is a large industry to tackle with cruelty-free options, but Because Animals has made a huge leap towards more sustainable and cruelty-free animal food options.
