In Defense of Animals has expressed deep disappointment with the outcome of a recent trial involving Joseph Olunwa, who was caught on camera brutally stoning a neighbor’s cat, Grayson. Despite the overwhelming evidence of his violent actions, Olunwa was given a light sentence, charged only with misdemeanor animal cruelty. The attack, which occurred on May 22, left Grayson with severe injuries, including permanent blindness and a broken jaw. Grayson’s medical bills have already exceeded $12,000, with additional care still required.

Surveillance footage clearly showed Olunwa’s vicious attack, along with physical evidence such as blood-stained rocks and testimony from responding officers. Despite this, Baltimore County District Attorney David Walsh offered a plea deal that resulted in a $500 fine and six months of unsupervised probation for Olunwa. Animal advocates, including Grayson’s guardian, were devastated by the leniency of the sentence, feeling it did not reflect the gravity of the crime.

Animal rights groups have mobilized in response. During the trial on September 16, protesters gathered outside the courthouse demanding that Olunwa face felony charges. Thousands of emails were sent by In Defense of Animals supporters, and a petition from Animal Victory collected over 14,000 signatures, calling for tougher legal action, restitution for veterinary expenses, and a permanent ban on Olunwa’s contact with animals.

Grayson’s guardian, Linda, expressed her deep frustration with the outcome, criticizing the justice system for failing to hold Olunwa accountable. She described her shock at how the case was handled, despite the clear evidence and testimony that supported the severity of the crime.
