Though we couldn’t be more different physically, humans and animals are both equally emotionally complex. Every emotion we feel — anxiety, fear, joy, grief, happiness — animals experience too. In fact, we could probably learn a thing or two from animals and their amazing ability to form incredible interspecies friendships. A very special cat in Ireland is even taking this ability to bond with other species to an even more astonishing level!

Meet Della, a cat who just gave birth to kittens on a farm in Ireland.

A few hours after having her own babies, she stumbled across newly hatched ducklings.

Acting on her mother instincts, Della brought the ducklings home with her one by one until they were all safe and sound.

Della cuddles and nurtures her feathered babies as if they were her own.

Amazingly enough, the ducklings are even able to suckle milk from her!

Her adopted babies blend right in, as she cares for all of them the same.

Though they are growing quickly, Della still looks after the ducks and is sure to keep them all in line!

If animals can bond with and care for different species, what’s our excuse? Shouldn’t we be doing the same and showing compassion for each other and for animals, whatever our differences may be?
