A New York City dog named Max was surrendered to Animal Care Centers of NYC for a heartbreaking reason. The six-year-old dog is a “boroughbred” pup, or a mixed breed dog from New York City’s five boroughs. A TikTok video shared to the account @aharrisphoto shares the heartbreaking reason that Max was surrendered.
@aharrisphoto Meet Max (184860) who was surrendered to @Animal Care Centers of NYC because the owner had knee surgery & was unable to walk Max anymore. The owner was also at risk of being evicted from his own apartment & if that happened, the homeless shelter doesn’t allow dogs at their facility. The owner believed Max deserved someone better suited to care for him as he could barely care for himself. Now Max is homeless & looking for his furever home. Together we can get him seen & heard. You know what to do besties! #shelterdog #animalshelter #rescuedog

When Max’s human had knee surgery, he could no longer care for the pup. “Boroughbred” Max has a high energy level and needs adequate exercise. Since his human could no longer walk, he felt that he was no longer able to provide Max with adequate care. Additionally, he was facing eviction after his surgery and was not allowed to bring Max along to temporary housing. So, he made the heartbreaking decision to surrender Max in hopes that someone would give the pup a new home that was able to give him the best care.
Although Max has been at the shelter for a few months now, his spirits are still high as he searches for a new home. Max’s ideal family will have plenty of energy to match the levels of the “boroughbred” pup. Additionally, they will have time to devote to training. Max’s ideal home is free of small children, small dogs, and cats. He would also prefer that there are no skateboards, as he is afraid of them.
