Your heart will literally melt watching the video of this beautiful dog find her mom just by using her sense of smell. This is because she is deaf and blind, but that certainly doesn’t hamper her excitement at the fact that mommy is home!
How wonderful it is to see a special needs dog living a happy life with a loving, permanent home! That doesn’t sound like a big deal but for special needs dogs, the chances of getting adopted in a normal shelter are pretty slim. They are the third hardest to place dogs in shelters, usually waiting an average of two years to find a forever home – that’s four times the normal wait time. Luckily, there are a growing number of shelters and rescues that specialize in placing these amazing, loyal, and loving dogs.
While adopting a special needs dog can involve a little extra time and costs, they are often more loyal, easily trainable, and develop super senses! If you are looking to add a new furry member to the family, consider adopting a special needs dog. Whether deaf, blind, three-legged, or a dog with a medical condition, special needs dogs have a lot of love to offer and the benefits will far outweigh the challenges. As with any animal, adoption is a serious, lifelong commitment-so be sure to research, ask questions, and discuss it with the entire family!
