Beloved Dog’s Silent Howl Tugs at Hearts on TikTok

In a TikTok clip shared by Julie, 31, (@therealjulsey), her cherished companion Moe, 13, attempts to howl, but silence greets the viewers. Initially mistaken for a muted video, the clip concludes with the faint sound of Moe gasping for air, leaving viewers deeply moved. Julie, from Austin, Texas, shared “We aren’t totally sure why he lost his howl. He used to have a crazy howl that sounded like a wolf when he was younger!”

The heart-wrenching footage has garnered 1.4 million views and over 357,000 likes. Users expressed their empathy, noting Moe’s valiant effort in the breath that followed the silent attempt.

Julie said, “As he got older, he slowly lost his howl, which seems to be something that happens to quite a few older dogs. In his older age, he also couldn’t bark.”

According to the VCA Animal Hospital, laryngeal paralysis, among other causes, can lead to the loss of a dog’s voice. Despite the video’s recent viral surge on February 14, Moe had already passed away on February 3. However, his endearing presence continues to resonate across the internet.

Julie reminisced about Moe’s expressive nature, noting how even without vocalizations, she understood everything he wanted. Despite battling arthritis and a neurodegenerative disease, Moe remained a wonderful companion until his last days.
