Pam Johal, 46, credits a raw vegan diet with mitigating her rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Johal lives in Southampton, U.K. with her husband and two children, aged five and six. She says that adopting a raw vegan diet not only reversed the symptoms of the disease but prevented her from having to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy cells. This can cause painful inflammation and issues in the joints along with many other symptoms. For Johal, the disease meant that she was often stuck in bed, and could not do everyday things. According to her, she could not even get out of the bath by herself.
However, in March 2020, Johal adopted a raw vegan diet. Raw veganism is a type of veganism that combines a vegan diet and raw foodism. Those following a raw food diet do not consume animal products; they also refrain from eating foods that are cooked at temperatures above 118 degrees Fahrenheit. For Johal, adopting a raw vegan diet meant cutting out meat and processed foods. Instead, she prioritized eating lots of fruit and vegetables.
Now, Pam Johal says that she has no symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis whatsoever. According to her, she began to notice an improvement in her mobility after only six months of following a raw vegan diet. She also takes herbal supplements, including nettle seed and mullein, to help manage the disease. Johal even runs a Facebook group to share her story and help other raw vegans begin their journey.
Several studies have shown that vegan diets do indeed have the power to help relieve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. One study showed that following a diet could help relieve pain and stiffness by up to 53 percent. This is potentially due to a vegan diet’s anti-inflammatory properties. However, it is always important to work with a healthcare provider to treat and manage rheumatoid arthritis.
