Puppy mills are facilities that exist with the sole purpose of producing dogs for pet stores. These large-scale breeding facilities are almost as bad as factory farms when it comes to animal abuse. Dogs in puppy mills spend their entire lives in cages the size of milk crates, deprived of their basic needs like proper food, water or medical care.

Little Belle, who is featured in this video, was rescued from a puppy mill in Portugal after living there for 12 years. The poor conditions she was forced to endure took an extreme toll on her body and spirit. When she was rescued she was dangerously weak, had leishmania (which causes lesions), ingrown nails, and glaucoma in her eyes. The worst part was that since she spent so long in the crate, she had no muscles and could barely walk.

However, none of this stopped her rescuers from doing all they could to help her recover. Eventually, Little Belle had to have both of her eyes removed due to pressure build up as well as a few of her teeth. While these procedures were brutal, they have helped her transform into the amazing pup she is now.

In the care of her forever family, Belle has learned what it means to be a dog, something that she should have known her entire life.

You can help protect other dogs from ever having to know this pain and suffering by always adopting and not shopping for pets. Puppy mills are funded by the sale of dogs in pet stores, so once the funds run out, they not longer have a reason to exist.
