This adorable baby elephant is Aya Min and she lives at the Wingabaw Elephant camp in Myanmar. In the blink of an eye, this sweet girl witnessed her mother slaughtered for her skin. If you didn’t know Aya Min’s story it would be easy to assume that the video is showing her playing with her trunk and playfully digging at the ground. But you know now, that nothing could be further from the truth. This poor girl has been traumatized and only time will heal her broken heart and broken spirit.
This heartbreaking video is a haunting reminder of the immense cruelties these majestic animals face day after day at the hands of human greed – from exploitation, captivity, and hunting. With one elephant killed every 15 minutes, it’s not surprising that the elephant is at risk of extinction. Scientists estimate that unless serious measures are taken to protect them, they could be extinct from the wild within the next 20 years.
There are many organizations working to make the world a better place for elephants, such as Save Elephant Foundation, Elephants in Japan, World Animal Protection, and the World Wildlife Fund. To learn about how you can help elephants click here and here.
