With summer officially here and the mercury rising, we are often reminded to keep our animal companions safe from the heat by never leaving them unattended in a hot car, keeping their paws off hot pavement, and always providing them with shelter from the heat and plenty of fresh, cool water. Although these important tips are typically associated with domestic animals like dogs and cats, they directly apply to all living creatures, including captive wild animals who are forced to live on display at roadside zoos and other tourist attractions.

roadside zoo that has been under fire for neglecting animals in the heat is Wilson’s Wild Animal Park in Virginia. According to a petition on Care2, this business has been cited several times for inadequate care of animals, including not providing proper veterinary care and shelter for the animals. The petition states that the bears at this zoo are suffering in the sweltering heat on concrete floors with empty drinking troughs and no pool to swim and cool off in.

Bears are not the only animals seriously suffering at this zoo. The petition cites PETA with this report: “Eyewitnesses also recently observed deer panting in the heat, a goat with nasal discharge, an alpaca with overgrown nails, lynxes and a lion cub confined to enclosures on concrete slabs, a lynx repeatedly pacing, and birds with apparent injuries and missing feathers.”

Heat exposure affects all living things, and these innocent animals at Wilson’s Wild Animal Park deserve a safe haven where their basic needs and health are put as a priority over profit. Please take a moment to sign this petition addressed to the USDA telling them to shut down this roadside zoo and send the animals to reputable sanctuaries. Please share this with your network as a reminder why we should never support roadside zoos and other businesses that exploit animals for a profit. The end to animal suffering begins with you!
