The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) made a huge rescue in the state of Arkansas recently. The organization was called in by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office to save over 180 animals from a horrible puppy mill. The rescue included 120 dogs, 11 exotic birds, 19 chickens, 20 horses, and some cats, bunnies, and even a few turtles.
All animals were removed from the property and evaluated in a temporary shelter. Some animals did not need immediate attention while others were drastically underweight. PetSmart charities are providing all the food supplies for the animals.
Tia Pope, manager for the HSUS Puppy Mill response, said in a press release, “No animal should ever be forced to live in conditions like this. We’re thankful to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for taking action and letting us help rescue these animals. Now, they’ll get the opportunity to live happy, healthy lives.”
The video below was released by the HSUS showing scenes from the puppy mill rescue. It’s horrible to see how these dogs are treated and your heart breaks for them when you see how happy they are to meet compassionate people. After these dogs are cleaned up and given a clean bill of health, the HSUS will work to find them happy homes.
Unfortunately, Arkansas has no laws against puppy mills, making it a haven for this horrible hoarding and treatment of animals. The HSUS plans on helping institute regulations and laws in 2015.
Big thank you to HSUS and PetSmart – ban the mills!
