A fossil collection dating back 380 million years has reportedly been lost forever—because of an unpaid shipping bill. According to a NBC News, a professor from William Paterson University in New Jersey has filed a lawsuit claiming the university’s negligence caused the loss of around 200 priceless fossils.

The fossils, which were collected by environmental science professor Martin Becker, were part of a major research project. Becker had spent countless hours recovering Devonian-age marine invertebrate specimens from the High Mountain region of Wayne, New Jersey. In June 2023, he sent the fossils—packed in 19 boxes—to a colleague in Florida to collaborate on a scientific monograph.

But they never arrived. The lawsuit alleges that after Becker handed the packages to the university’s mailroom, the shipment was picked up by UPS, only to vanish into a bureaucratic black hole. Months later, Becker discovered that the university’s account with UPS had been cancelled due to unpaid invoices. As a result, the fossils were intercepted and eventually discarded in a landfill near Nashville, Tennessee.

The mishap underscores how even priceless pieces of Earth’s natural history can be casually discarded due to institutional neglect. The suit seeks damages not just for the collection, but also for the emotional distress suffered by Becker.

This story is more than just an unfortunate mistake—it’s a stark reminder of how fragile our connection to the planet’s deep history really is. Fossils like these are not just academic artefacts; they are irreplaceable snapshots of ancient life, and once lost, they’re gone forever.

If we value life—past, present, and future—we must do more to protect it. Speak up for the planet. Support science. Choose cruelty-free, Conservation-minded lifestyles. Every little bit counts.
