The Humane Society of the United States, in collaboration with Chattanooga’s McKamey Animal Center, intervened to save over 100 rabbits from a home in Tennessee that had become overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals. The rescue took place on the morning of August 20, following a heartfelt plea for help from the caregiver, who had been raising rabbits for over 30 years.
The caregiver, who had long credited his rabbits with helping him overcome a battle with alcoholism, found himself unable to maintain their care after a recent health crisis. As the number of rabbits multiplied, he reached out to the local shelter, recognizing that the situation had grown beyond his ability to manage.
Upon arrival, the rescue teams discovered the rabbits living in extremely poor conditions, with many suffering from health issues such as flea infestations, hair loss, and other injuries often seen in overcrowded environments. The situation was compounded by the presence of food scattered across the floors and rabbits burrowing into the furniture. Additionally, several of the rabbits were suspected to be pregnant, further complicating the already dire circumstances.
The Humane Society expressed gratitude towards the caregiver for acknowledging his limits and seeking help. Jessica Johnson, Senior Director of the Humane Society’s animal rescue team, emphasized the significance of the operation, noting that the caregiver’s decision to surrender the rabbits was an act of love, ensuring they could find better homes where they could thrive.
The rescued rabbits have been relocated to a temporary emergency shelter, where they will undergo medical examinations and receive necessary treatments. Once they are healthy, efforts will be made to place them in adoptive homes through partnerships with local shelters and rescue organizations.
