Allergies Affect Dogs and Cats as Well

Turns out that not only humans suffer from allergies. Just like people, dogs and cats may have seasonal or specific allergies. And, just like humans, these allergies can stem from a widespread array of irritants.

Allergies are an immune response to a specific substance. This substance is called an allergen. For allergy sufferers, the body is overly sensitive to the allergen and the immune system overreacts to the substance. Some allergies may be simply annoying. However, others can be life-threatening.

In dogs and cats, symptoms of allergies are very similar to symptoms in humans. The dog or cat may be itchy in one spot or all over. They may also wheeze, sneeze, cough, or have runny eyes and nose. Additionally, animals may suffer from an upset stomach due to allergies. It is important to note that all these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, and veterinary should always be sought if an animal demonstrates some or all of these symptoms.

Dogs and cats can be allergic to several things. Like seasonal allergy sufferers, they may be allergic to dust or pollen in the air. They may also be suffering from a flea allergy, also known as flea dermatitis. This can occur even if they are on preventative medications. Flea allergies may result in itchy skin in a specific area. They can be triggered by a single flea bite. Additionally, dogs and cats may be allergic to an ingredient in their food or to a product they are exposed to.

Although some breeds, such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Staffies, and Westies are particularly prone to allergies, they can affect any dog or cat of any (or mixed) breed. If a dog or cat is suffering from allergies, it is important to seek veterinary care to help relieve their symptoms. Left untreated, allergies can cause dogs or cats to itch at themselves. This can break the skin and lead to infection and discomfort. Additionally, some allergies may be deadly if left unchecked.
