Pet owners in Kent, UK, are urged to be vigilant after a series of unusual cat attacks. Over 50 incidents of cats shaved by hair clippers have been reported to an animal welfare organization in Medway since the beginning of December. This is not only an alarming situation but also risks the cats’ health and safety.

According to Animals Lost and Found founder, Natasha McPhee, the assaults were “very alarming.” “These sorts of things may seem small because the animals aren’t coming home injured,” she said. “But, as everyone knows, these things can escalate.” With many such incidents occurring quickly, pet owners must take action to protect their cats.
Attacks have been recorded in several Kent towns, including Gillingham, Cranbrook, Ashford, Ramsgate, and parts of East London. The RSPCA Chief Inspector, Patrick Hamby, has urged pet owners to report incidents of cat shaving to the charity or the police. Reporting such incidents will help the RSPCA monitor the situation and concentrate more on areas where the attacks are happening.
Although the shaved cats are not being injured, it is still a worrying situation as it puts them in shock and trauma. Shaving requires the cats to be held down by someone they don’t know, which can cause immense stress to the cats. If a cat has been shaved, it may show signs of not wanting to go out anymore or wanting to go out much less. In some cases, it can even lead to long-term behavioral changes. Therefore, it is essential to take some preventative measures.
Keeping cats inside at night is one of the best ways to protect them. This is especially important for cats who are free to roam outside. During the night, monitoring what’s happening outside is challenging, and this is when most of these attacks occur. Additionally, it is always better to be safe than sorry, so consider installing a security camera outside your home. It may seem unnecessary, but it can provide peace of mind and help deter perpetrators.
The recent series of cat-shaving attacks in Kent is an alarming situation that requires urgent action. Pet owners must be vigilant and take preventative measures to protect their beloved pets. By reporting incidents to the RSPCA or the police, pet owners can help to track and monitor the situation and potentially catch the perpetrators. Ultimately, working together can create a safer environment for our furry friends.
