Two police officers and an Alaska man rescued a baby moose from what authorities described as “a sure demise.” The calf had fallen into Beluga Lake and became stuck in a narrow space between a floatplane and a dock.
Spencer Warren, an employee of Destination Alaska Adventure Co., was preparing a floatplane for the day’s excursions at around 6:30 AM on Friday when he heard an unusual sound. Initially mistaking it for a strange bird, he soon discovered the source: a baby moose trapped between the plane’s floats and the dock in Homer, a community on the Kenai Peninsula, about 220 miles south of Anchorage.
Recognizing the immediate danger, Warren’s first thought was of the calf’s mother, known to be fiercely protective. Sure enough, the anxious mother moose was nearby, just four feet away with another calf, making it risky for Warren to approach the distressed animal. The mother’s protective nature had proven fatal to a photographer in Homer just the previous month.
The baby moose struggled to gain a foothold on the slippery metal float, its hooves sliding as if on an ice rink. Realizing he couldn’t manage the rescue alone, Warren contacted his boss, who promptly called the Homer police for assistance.
Two officers arrived at the scene. One strategically positioned his police cruiser between the mother moose and the floatplane, allowing the other officer and Warren to safely approach the calf. The moose had one leg outstretched over the plane’s float, making movement difficult.
In a careful but swift maneuver, Warren and the officer lifted the baby moose onto the dock. The exhausted calf sprawled out on the boardwalk until one of the officers helped it stand. The calf then reunited with its mother, who affectionately licked the water off her baby’s body, a tender moment captured on camera by Warren.
