Al Gore Announces Climate TRACE at COP27 that Tracks Global Emissions Down to the Individual Facility

Al Gore’s Climate TRACE coalition just unveiled the world’s most detailed inventory of global greenhouse gas emissions at COP27 in Egypt. He hopes this will be a critical tool to help climate negotiators address the crisis.

The Climate TRACE coalition’s tool shows the global inventory of greenhouse gas emissions down to the individual facility.

“Of course, the world has long known what the overall amount of greenhouse gas pollution in the atmosphere is. What’s different about this [database] is the accurate apportioning of who’s responsible for what and the granularity that allows us a focus on specific emissions sources,” Gore told Protocol.

He went on to say that he does not doubt that the database “will be put to a lot of use in negotiations for sure.”

The inventory reportedly shows facility-level emissions, which can help negotiators to focus on the most polluting sites in individual countries. For example, a solar farm in one place might be able to displace significantly more emissions so the inventory will allow negotiators to identify where they would get the “biggest bang for their buck,” Protocol reported.

Through AI and satellite data, Climate TRACE was able to determine that a significant amount of carbon emissions come from a small number of facilities. For example, they found one steel mill in Korea emits more greenhouse gas Pollution in a year than all of Bosnia.

Many countries do not have accurate or up-to-date emissions statistics, so this new tool will be extremely helpful for countries to begin the fight against the climate crisis! The inventory is now live on Climate TRACE’s website and is free for anyone to access.
