A new study by Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College and the Grantham Research Institute highlights the detrimental effects of air Pollution on pets. Using extensive data from over 7 million veterinary visits across the United Kingdom, the researchers found a clear link between poor air quality and increased health issues in cats and dogs. Specifically, even a slight rise in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air led to a 0.7% uptick in vet visits for both species. These findings are comparable to studies showing similar health impacts on humans.
The research indicates that if the U.K. reduced pollution to meet the World Health Organization’s recommended levels, there could be 80,000 fewer vet visits each year. This reduction would save about 15 million British pounds in pet healthcare costs annually, with the total economic benefits likely much higher. The findings emphasize the wide-ranging impact of air Pollution, which doesn’t just affect human health but also the well-being of animals sharing our environment.
Data for the study came from the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET), capturing information from about 5% of U.K. veterinary practices. Researchers paired this with air quality readings from monitors across the country, analyzing trends over nearly six years, from 2017 to 2022. Notably, the increase in vet admissions was linked to issues that could logically stem from Pollution rather than unrelated conditions like post-operative care.
Air Pollution’s harmful effects on humans are well-documented, with one in every six global deaths in 2019 attributed to it. However, less is known about how Pollution affects animals, even though pets are exposed to similar environmental conditions as their owners. “The bulk of the research on the deleterious health effects of air Pollution has focused on humans,” said Akshaya Jha, assistant professor of economics and public policy at Heinz College. “Our findings suggest that animal health is also adversely affected by air Pollution.”
