30 Atlantic Countries Agree to Strengthen Environmental and Commercial Cooperation

As the United Nations General Assembly takes place in New York, over 30 nations bordering the Atlantic have agreed to cooperate on issues surrounding the second largest of the world’s oceans. Such issues include environmental protection, economic development, and maritime issues. The agreement was finalized on Monday, September 18. Known as the Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation, the signed nations hope to foster greater international coordination.

The Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation united nations spread over four continents. Countries from North America, South America, Africa, and Europe all took part in the meeting. It is hoped that this agreement will help solidify cooperation between the North and South Atlantic on a set of important issues.

Signatory countries are Angola, Argentina, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Canada, Costa Rica, Cote d’Ivoire, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Guyana, Iceland, Ireland, Liberia, Mauritania, Morocco, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Portugal, the Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Spain, Togo, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay.

Although the Atlantic is an important economic driver for many countries, it is also facing severe environmental crises. Changing temperatures and currents are of particular concern as Climate change intensifies. These factors could cause increased storm activity which may pose threats to human populations living near shorelines. Additionally, the changing environment could threaten vulnerable animal and plant species.

Although the Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation represents an important unification, it does not address all the important issues facing the Atlantic Ocean. Even as this agreement was created, protests occurred in New York streets. Thousands of protesters hoped to push governments to take decisive action on Climate change. However, leaders from some of the nations that emit the greatest amounts of greenhouse gasses will not be attending. Additionally, United States President Biden will not attend a Wednesday summit focused on Climate change
