Hormones are chemical messengers that have dramatic effects on your mental, physical, and emotional health. They play a huge role in our mood, weight, sleep, appetite, and stress levels, to name a few. Hormonal balance is necessary for keeping everything functioning properly so you can feel your absolute best!
TikTok user @paigelindgren is a certified hormone specialist and she shares three things you can do to have happy hormones!
Her first tip is to stop drinking coffee on an empty stomach. While many of us are tempted to pour ourselves a cup as soon as we get out of bed, this can throw our hormones out of whack. There have been numerous studies showing that drinking coffee on an empty stomach raises cortisol to extremely high levels, and it messes with your blood sugar, says Paige.
As a result, you are more likely to experience instant energy crashes, and no one wants that. With that being said, there’s no need to completely cut out your morning coffee ritual. Instead, Paige suggests drinking coffee with your breakfast, or after. If you must drink your coffee first thing in the morning, you can try adding a fat to it, like coconut oil, or honey for some added carbohydrates.
Her second tip for happy hormones is to take vitamin B daily! This vitamin tends to be depleted in people who are struggling with hormonal balance. B vitamins can also Support the adrenal gland, which helps Support our stress response, says Paige. According to a medical doctor, “Vitamin B12 is an integral part of methylation, a process your liver uses to break down cellular waste products and excess hormones.”
Even if you’re not a big fan of taking supplements daily, try adding in a B complex and an adrenal Support supplement and see how your body responds. However, keep in mind that it’s always best to check with your doctor before adding any supplements into your diet.
The third tip is to be mindful of how much HIIT or (High Intensity Interval Training) you’re doing. HIIT consists of alternating short periods of intense or explosive anaerobic exercise with brief recovery periods until the point of exhaustion. While HIIT can be beneficial for your cardiovascular health if done correctly, if you’re someone who is struggling with balancing your hormones, you may want to try walking or more low-intensity exercises instead.
High-intensity workouts can put your body under a ton of stress and it may start to act in survival mode by retaining water and holding onto more fat. According to a study, HIIT can stimulate an acute cortisol response resulting in high levels of this hormone, potentially causing weight gain, depression, digestive issues, chronic fatigue, sleep problems and brain fog. Paige recommends walking, pilates, yoga, or strength training as alternatives.
