The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shared an article that described how one 13-year old infected 11 family members during a three-week gathering.

During the gathering, the thirteen-year-old infected 11 others including her two brothers, two grandparents, and her two parents. “This outbreak highlights several important issues,” wrote authors, including lead author Dr. Noah G. Schwartz, “First, children and adolescents can serve as the source for Covid-19 outbreaks within families, even when their symptoms are mild.”

14 people stayed in the same house and 12 experienced symptoms that led to 11 positive Covid tests. This is additional research that helps establish that teenagers can help spread the virus. None of the people in the house died from the virus, but two were hospitalized.

“It re-emphasizes the importance of basic public health precautions, even with people we know and love,” Dr. Megan L. Ranney, a professor of emergency medicine at Brown who was not involved with the study, told the New York Times. The study also confirms that physical distancing helps stop the spread of the virus. During the stay, six relatives came and visited during the day but kept a physical distance. They never got sick.

The article ends with this mandate, “Finally, SARS-CoV-2 can spread efficiently during gatherings, especially with prolonged, close contact. Physical distancing, face mask use, and hand hygiene reduce transmission; gatherings should be avoided when physical distancing and face mask use are not possible.”
