We all want to feel good, right? So get lots of sleep, plenty of exercise, and eat your fruits and veggies! And maybe eat a little extra baobab fruit, since it is known as the “feel good fruit” after all.
Baobab is the fruit of the Adansonia, a species of tree native to Africa. With its hard green nut-like shell, the fruit pod resembles a slim, small watermelon and is filled with white, marshmallow-like powdery pulp. The snowy white powder found inside is similar in texture to cornstarch, and has similar properties as it is a natural thickening agent thanks to its high pectin content. But it has also become a common addition to smoothies, juices, health food bars and desserts thanks to its superb nutritional profile.
According to the National Geographic, this fruit “contains six times as much vitamin C as oranges, twice as much calcium as milk, and plenty of B vitamins, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, and antioxidants.” And why do we care about antioxidants again? Oh yeah, these are the disease-fighting molecules credited with helping reduce the risk of everything from cancer to heart disease. Baobab fruit is also a superb source of dietary fiber. Be warned though, that you can have too much of a good thing. Go overboard and you will experience this super fruit’s natural laxative effect!
So it’s good for us. And it is also unique in that unlike most other fruit, baobab dries naturally on the branch, so all we need to do is harvest them, ditch the oily seeds, and scoop up the remaining nutrient-dense raw food powder. And if you like sweet-tangy-tart, then this flavour is for you! Baobab is said to taste somewhere in between grapefruit, pear, and vanilla. Yum!
I don’t know about you, but I love trying out new things, and my morning green monster drink can always use a bit more inspiration! So let’s be baobab’ed!
