Chlorella is a microscopic blue green algae that grows in fresh water, and is considered to be one of the most nutritional superfoods on the planet. This single-celled organism, according to Naturopathic Doctor Meghan Walker, “is high in protein, B-vitamins and chlorophyll. Although studies are ongoing, it has shown itself to be helpful in decreasing the spread of certain tumours, lowering cholesterol and ridding the body of certain forms of toxicity including dioxin”. It is said that these blue green algaes can contain up to 60 to 70% vegetable protein and also provide all the essential amino acids in a form that is incredibly easy for the body to digest.
As mentioned, one well known use of this green guy is during detoxification. It is uber alkalizing, and it has been found to help remove heavy metals from the body, and cleanse and optimize oxygenation of the blood. It has also been looked at as a useful aid in treating colds, Crohn’s disease, constipation, bad breath, and ulcers, however more evidence is needed to fully rate the effectiveness.
Most of the chlorella that is available in the U.S. is grown in Japan or Taiwan and is processed into tablets and liquid extracts for longevity and ease of use. These extracts contain “chlorella growth factor,” a water soluble compound that is highly nutritious and immune boosting, and allows chlorella the ability to quadruple itself in quantity every 20 hours, which no other plant on Earth can do. Thus far the benefits for consuming this brilliant brew have shown to include stimulation of tissue repair and protection of cells against some toxic substances.
Simple to take in tablet form, or stir into smoothies or salad dressings as a powder, I’d say it’s high time to go green!
1. Now Foods, Chlorella 1000 mg
These tablets contain all naturally occurring chlorophyll & beta-carotene and are made from broken cell wall algae, an important factor when it comes to our body’s ability to absorb the benefits.
