The Benefits of Finger Millet (And 10 Picks!)

finger millet

Finger Millet, scientifically known as Eleusine coracana or Ragi, is a well-rounded grain in India and Africa. Revered for its nutritional richness, finger millet is a staple food in several Indian regions, prominently Karnataka, and across various parts of Africa. Its versatility and health benefits make it an indispensable part of local cuisines and dietary practices.

Benefits

Finger millet has a ton of health benefits. One of its standout features is its exceptional calcium content, making it a crucial dietary addition for individuals seeking to fortify their bones and prevent conditions like osteoporosis.

Additionally, finger millet’s role in managing blood sugar levels sets it apart as a valuable asset in combating diabetes and promoting overall metabolic health. Its high fiber content and unique phytochemical composition facilitate a slower digestion process, preventing sudden spikes in blood sugar levels and enhancing insulin sensitivity.

Also, finger millet serves as an excellent source of iron, offering a remedy for combating anemia and replenishing depleted iron stores in the body. This makes it particularly beneficial for expectant mothers, individuals recovering from illness, and those prone to iron deficiency. Furthermore, finger millet’s rich array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants contribute to its anti-aging properties, protecting cells from oxidative damage and bolstering overall cellular health.

Ken L said, “I bought this millet last week. I saw some reviews about how difficult it is to cook so I am writing my experience in case it helps. For diet and health, I need to stay away from processed flour eg. bread, pizza. pancakes, etc., I like oatmeal porridge but need an alternative for two or three days a week. This is it.

To turn this millet into a flour that can be cooked I use a pestle and mortar to grind. It takes about 2-5 minutes for about 3-5 tablespoons of millet at a time. For me alone, I grind about 5-7 tablespoons. To prepare the porridge I mix the flour into about 1.5 cups of water. I bring another 1.5 or 2 cups of water to a boil and add my mixture. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to boil down to a thick porridge. I add about a tablespoon of oat milk and a teaspoon or so of sugar and butter and enjoy!

Keeps me feeling full and healthy for at least 4 hours.”
