Doctors are recommending that fruits and vegetables become a central part of treating patients with hypertension. Research has shown that diets rich in these foods can lower blood pressure, reduce cardiovascular risks, and improve kidney health. A recent study published in The American Journal of Medicine highlights these benefits through a five-year randomized control trial.
Despite advancements in pharmacological treatments, hypertension-related chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular mortality rates continue to rise. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among chronic kidney disease patients. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, known for its high fruit and vegetable content, is recommended as the first-line treatment for hypertension but is often under-prescribed and poorly implemented.
The study involved 153 hypertensive patients with macroalbuminuria, a condition indicating chronic kidney disease and high cardiovascular risk. Participants were divided into three groups: those who added 2-4 cups of fruits and vegetables to their daily diet, those who took sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) tablets, and those who received standard medical care. Results showed that both fruits and vegetables and NaHCO3 improved kidney health, but only fruits and vegetables also reduced blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health.
Dr. Maninder Kahlon, co-investigator of the study, noted that fruits and vegetables achieved these benefits with lower doses of medication, highlighting their importance as a foundational treatment for hypertension. The study suggests that treatment should begin with dietary interventions, adding medications as necessary.
The researchers urge clinicians to measure the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) in hypertensive patients to identify underlying kidney disease and assess cardiovascular risk. By prioritizing healthy diets, we can better manage chronic diseases and improve overall health outcomes.
