As New York City begins its Phase 1 reopening on June 8, cases around the world continue to rise and the CDC released new forecasts on case numbers and related deaths.
The CDC is predicting 127,000 Americans will die from the coronavirus by June 27, according to a newly published forecast.“This week’s national ensemble forecast suggests that the number of newly-reported COVID-19 deaths per week will continue to decline. It predicts between 118,000 and 143,000 cumulative COVID-19 deaths by June 27,” says the CDC’s website. The data used 20 different forecasts and models to make its predictions. The CDC’s revised estimate was higher than the previous week, the estimated deaths published the week before were just over 123,000 by June 27.
On June 8, New York City began Phase 1 of its reopening plan after the coronavirus effectively shut down the city for almost three months. Governor Cuomo said that the city will perform 35,000 tests a day to facilitate reopening. The state’s positive rate for the virus is 1.2%. Mayor Bill de Blasio also announced that 20 miles of new busways would be installed to help bring people into the city for work. “This is a triumphant moment for New Yorkers who fought back against the disease,” de Blasio told CNN.
New York City was the epicenter of the pandemic as the United States’ largest and most dense city. Over 377,000 people in the state contracted the coronavirus, with over 30,000 deaths in the state. 21,000 deaths were in New York City.
