Pineapple Fabric Featured in New Calvin Klein Trainers

The fashion industry is notorious for its environmental impact. From water pollution to greenhouse gas emissions, fast fashion can be extremely damaging to the climate and ecosystems around the world. In light of this, many brands are beginning to look for ways to help reduce their carbon footprint. Calvin Klein is joining the effort to incorporate more sustainable practices into their brand with the launch of their newest shoes. These shoes will be made with pineapple leaf fabric and a knitted upper portion and are a collaboration between Calvin Klein, Ananas Anam, and TENCEL™

The pineapple leaf fabric the brand will use is PIÑAYARN®. Produced by Ananas Anam, PIÑAYARN® is derived from the discarded leaves of pineapples. The combination of TENCEL™ and PIÑAYARN® helps make Calvin Klein’s sneakers a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional fabrics and processes.

The new sneakers will be called “The Sustainable Knit Trainer” and will feature 70 percent TENCEL Lyocell REFIBRA™ and 30% Piñatex™. Using the TENCEL Lyocell REFIBRA™ helps increase the sneaker’s sustainability as well. The Lyocell fabric is produced via a method that allows nearly all the solvent and water used in the process to be recycled. Additionally, the trainers will use wood pulp from sustainable forests and recycled cotton as materials.

Hopefully, this sneaker represents a big step forward for the fashion brand. Officials from both TENCEL™ and Ananas Anam expressed excitement about the partnership with Calvin Klein. Ananas Anam has previously partnered with other fashion brands including Zara and Saucony. The vegan leather from the company, Piñatex, has also been used to create vegan leather car interiors.

Moving away from synthetic fabrics could have a huge environmental impact. Not only are they costly in terms of resource use, they also contribute to plastic pollution. Synthetic fabrics are also made of plastics which break down into microplastics. These microplastics can break down and shed into waterways contributing to the ongoing plastics problem.
