The production of any product from food to clothing generates waste. The products themselves can also create waste when they end up in landfill and take too long to decompose. Shoes are a necessity, so many people probably do not think twice about the materials used to make their shoes. However, many brands are switching to more sustainable, eco-friendly materials for the sake of the environment. Adidas, for instance made shoes using reclaimed plastic from the ocean. Now, Nike is looking to make sustainability efforts too! They recently announced an Earth Day Pack, the Plant Color Collection, and VaporMax 2 Random.

The Earth Day Pack is made with recycled leather. When leather is manufactured, many scraps are discarded and sent to landfill. Nike, instead, is making use of the material and making it into Flyleather which is the main material of their environmentally friendly Earth Day sneakers designed by Steve Harrington. The sneakers feature an anthropomorphic Earth on the designs and unlike the other announced sneakers, might actually be released in Spring since Earth Day is on April 22.

The VaporMax 2 Random is 75 percent recycled. Similar to the use of discarded, recycled leather in the Earth Day pack, this sneaker uses excess Flyknit yarn that would normally be sent to landfill. These sneakers both reduce waste and recycle materials, a win for the environment. The Plant Color Collection uses plant-based dyes rather than synthetic dyes to make colorful sneakers and the sneakers have a canvas upper.
