Herbs have long been used for hair to treat everything from an oily or dry scalp to lank or greasy hair. Some herbs can even darken or lighten your hair.

We can buy shampoos and other hair care products that tout herbal and botanical ingredients. However, there is a simple, cheap, and package-free way to introduce herbs to your haircare regime without having to buy any products.

You can use fresh herbs from your herb garden or dried herbs from your kitchen cabinet to make simple hair rinses. Remember that if you are using dried herbs, you will need to use a lot less as dried herbs are more concentrated.

Rosemary

Rosemary has anti-inflammatory properties that are thought to help with the symptoms of dandruff and itchy or dry scalp. Using a rosemary rinse may also help to soften your hair and give it that sought-after shine. Research shows that the oils in rosemary even help to stimulate hair growth.

Sage

Sage is said to be one of the best herbs to help relieve the symptoms of dry and itchy scalp. It should be noted that sage may gradually darken hair. This is great if that is the look you are after, but you might want to be careful if you cherish your blonde, grey, or white hair. If you make a rinse with sage, black tea, and/or cloves, you will have a much more potent hair-darkening solution.

Lavender

The antimicrobial properties of lavender may help ease symptoms of dandruff and itchy scalp. It may also help to balance oily hair. Due to its relaxing and calming aromatherapeutic properties, using a lavender hair rinse during a shower or bath before bed would be a wonderfully relaxing option.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is excellent for ridding the hair of residue build-up from shampoos and conditioners. It also helps to reduce excess sebum that results in an oily scalp and greasy hair. Aloe vera is also rich in vitamins A, C, and E, all of which help to promote a healthy scalp.

Calendula

Calendula is a really good conditioner for dry hair and works well to ease symptoms of itchy and dry scalp due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Not only is calendula soft a soothing for the skin, but a garden full of these beautiful flowers gives another reason to start growing some of your own.

Chamomile

Chamomile is really good for blond hair as it is thought to bring out the natural highlights. If you don’t have a stand of chamomile in your garden, you can use the same chamomile teabag you use for your bedtime tea. Chamomile is also very gentle and may help soothe and calm any scalp irritations.

How to Make a Hair Rinse

There are a couple of ways to make a hair rinse. One involves water, and the other involves apple cider vinegar. Each comes with its benefits. You may use fresh or dried herbs for your hair rinses. You will need some clean and dry mason jars and some lids.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): One of the benefits of using ACV for your hair rinses is that it comes with a list of hair beneficial properties. It can help to balance the pH in hair, reducing signs of fluffy or frizziness and giving your hair a bit of luster. It is also anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal, making it a great tonic for dry and itchy scalp and symptoms of dandruff.

To make an ACV rinse, you need to fill a clean glass mason jar with a bunch of herbs of your choice. There is no real rule here, but don’t be too stingy. Next, fill your jar with ACV until all of the herbs are completely covered. Seal your jar and leave it to infuse for a week or two.

When you are ready to use your ACV rinse, simply spoon out two or three tablespoons into a bowl and top the bowl up with water from the shower. The dilution rate is subjective and depends on your hair type, hair length, and preference.

Once you have your mixture, pour the rinse over your hair and massage it into your scalp. Leave it on your hair for up to fifteen minutes before washing it out under the shower.

One super fun bonus of making ACV herbal hair rinses is that you can use the infused vinegar in salads and other recipes, too!

Water: Making a herbal hair rinse with water is as easy as making an extra-strong cup of tea. This method is great if you are looking for a rinse that you can use there and then without having to wait for a week for the infusion to complete. Simply take a bunch of your preferred herbs and put them into a bowl. Then pour boiling water over your herbs. Let the herbs infuse into the water and let the water cool. You can pour this cooled solution over your head and massage it into your hair and scalp. Let the rinse sit for up to fifteen minutes before washing it out.

*BE CAREFUL WHEN USING GLASS CONTAINERS IN OR AROUND THE SHOWER. SOAPY HANDS AND GLASS AREN’T A GREAT COMBINATION!*
