The researchers found that one in seven cosmetics that contained talc also included asbestos in measurable quantities, according to Insider. The researchers from the Environmental Working Group looked at 21 samples that included talc, including eye shadow, face powder, and kids’ makeup kits. Per the article, “Asbestos is a carcinogen and it is known that there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos.”

Nneka Leiba is the vice president of healthy living science for the Environmental Working Group and one of the authors of the study, told Insider, “I think people should be quite concerned. One in seven is no small number — I use more than seven personal-care products. I definitely took a hard look at my products after we did this study.”

Leiba and other experts recommend that people stop purchasing products with talc and look to other products instead. Leiba also recommends using cosmetics from companies that publicize rigorous testing practices for products.

Dr. Ron Gordon, a research pathologist at Mount Sinai Hospital, and another expert that studies health risks of products with asbestos told Insider, “I do believe it’s a critical issue. I’m not saying everyone gets cancer, I’m not saying cosmetics are the cause of every tumor, but I do think it’s a cause. Most of these people I’ve looked at have had no other potential exposures.”
