Alternative leather has experienced a marked rise in recent years. Made from a variety of plant-based materials, these leathers are both more humane and more environmentally friendly than animal skin leather. Traditional leather requires large amounts of resources to produce. It contributes to deforestation, Pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, animals raised for leather are subject to cruel practices. These include branding, castration, and tail docking without painkillers. Fortunately, many companies are increasingly aware of the negative impacts of leather. Recently, pineapple, cactus, and mushrooms are just a few of the materials now used to create a variety of vegan leather goods.

Now, another company is seeing the benefits of vegan leather. The Scottish brand, Strathberry recently launched its first line of alternative-leather handbags. Strathberry is already a favorite of British royalty. Both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have carried bags from this company. Luckily, conscious consumers can now follow suit!
The handbags are made from grape-based alternative leather. This new collection represents a huge step forward for Strathberry’s sustainability mission. To produce the new, alternative textile, Strathberry utilizes grape waste products from winemakers. By re-purposing these byproducts, the company is able to produce a humane and sustainable substitute for animal skin leather. Utilizing this waste also helps create a circular economy. The new grape-skin leather has a smooth finish showcased in Strathberry’s new styles.
Created with the help of celebrity stylist, Tara Swennen, Strathberry’s new vegan collection features seven different styles of handbags. Additionally, the company has partnered with One Tree Planted for this collection. During the first week of the collection’s launch, 10 percent of sales will be donated to One Tree Planted. For every dollar donated, a tree is planted by the organization. One tree planted supports global reforestation. You can shop Strathberry’s new vegan collection online.
