Technological innovation has finally made its way to your 20-year old bathroom scale!
Instead of the fixed, one-number scale that we’ve all been using, it’s now possible to upgrade to a sleek and understated all-powerful device that measures a variety of body composition metrics including overall weight, muscle mass, body fat, water weight, bone mass, and more. I’m talking about smart scales.
Smart scales give you a far more detailed and accurate indication of the makeup of your body. While a traditional scale offers overall weight, a smart scale breaks that number down into individual metrics, which can then be used to help you refine your wellness plan. They are incredible tools for those building muscle mass or decreasing body fat.
Of course, smart scales aren’t just relegated to the refinement of the body, but it’s also a healthier way to view that dreaded number on the scale.
When it comes down to it, an overall weight number is generally just for vanity and is unhelpful when discerning actual health. This number won’t tell you if you’re cutting body fat, gaining muscle mass, reducing visceral fat, or carrying extra water weight. For instance, it’s possible to lose body and visceral fat, while gaining muscle mass, which could show a gain in weight instead of a loss. Yet, you’re still getting healthier! Simply put, all body metrics are important to determine your wellness, especially if when designing and refining an exercise routine and/or diet.
It sounds great, but how can a scale determine all these factors? Depends on the brand and type of scale. In general, “they use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which is a [non-invasive] tool that evaluates your body composition by sending a weak electrical current through your body.” Sounds scary, but it’s completely harmless!
It’s important to note that not all smart scales are designed equally. While opting for the most expensive isn’t necessary, you may want to shell out a few extra dollars for the best quality. It’s important to balance your budget with quality, as well as with the extra bells and whistles that you may need such as your scale connecting to your smartphone or recording progress in memory.
Here are a few high-rated scales at a wide range of prices with a wide range of bells and whistles!
1. FITINDEX Bluetooth Smart Wireless Scale

FITINDEX Bluetooth Smart Wireless Scale/Amazon.com
This FITINDEX Bluetooth Smart Wireless Scale gives you most of the bang for a very reasonable buck! At under twenty-five dollars, this smart scale allows you to connect wireless from your smartphone to your scale in order to record and save your body metrics as you progress. Using bio-electrical impedance analysis, the FITINDEX smart scale measures 13 body composition metrics including body fat, water weight, muscle mass, BMI, BMR, bone mass, protein, skeletal muscle, and other data. Great for a family, — multiple user option — runs off of three triple AAA batteries, and offers an export option to save your data. This scale costs $23.99.
Martha G. says “I LOVE this scale. I gained a lot of weight after marriage and kids and was hesitant to get back to my healthy weight. It took years to make the decision! Finally, after a scary endocrinologist appointment, I decided that was that. I remembered a friend of mine having mentioned this brand, so I ordered it quickly. Of course, I had avoided a bathroom scale for years too. It arrived quickly and setup was a breeze. I was so shocked at how modern these things are nowadays. I mean, it connects to an app? Sign me up! The app is pretty straightforward too. You turn the app on then step lightly on the scale to turn it on and sync it to the app. It takes like 2 seconds, literally. Then once the scale shows a 0 value, you step on the metal sensors. Again, 2 seconds. Both the scale AND your app will give you a weight reading. But, the app will break it down for you so thoroughly! It’s not just weight…it’s BMI, metabolic age, fat %, water %, muscle mass, and so many other things. My metabolic age was, of course, surprising, but it only motivated me more. I started the ketogenic diet and – although people are advised against this – I weighed myself every day to track my progress. The battery died after 3 months. Overall, I really love this product and how sleek it is, how easy it is to hide in your bathroom, and how it keeps me motivated to stay healthy!”

Preston Rollins says “I paid $180 for my Withings scale and their app doesn’t provide half of the information this app does. The Withings scale simply quit working within a year. This scale measures very quickly and accurately. The app gives a readout of bodyfat%, BMI, Subcutaneous fat%, Visceral fat%, Body water%, Skeletal muscle%, Muscle mass in pounds, bone mass, even protein%. It also shows you where you are versus where you should be in every category. It’s worth every penny. BUY IT!!!”

QardioBase2 WiFi Smart Scale and Body Analyzer/Amazon.com

Paul Cutler says “Qardio has made a good product even better. I had previously purchased the original QardioBase when it first came out and just bought the new QardioBase 2. Qardio has fixed two of the issues I had with this new model. Setup with the Qardio app was easier than the first one and the QardioBase 2 doesn’t wobble! It’s much sturdier and even better, now includes a rechargeable battery via a USB cable rather than using AAA batteries. The Qardio app is a breeze to use and I appreciate the weekly reminder to step on the scale. Just step on the QardioBase 2 and it syncs all of the data to your phone. I love the fact that it doesn’t just measure weight, it also tracks BMI, fat, and muscle making it great to see workout progress. The app is easy to use and shows your latest measurements as well as your current progress for the week with a smiley face to let you know if you’ve lost a little weight over the week. You can set a goal within the app and easily track all of your progress and look at it as a graph or show all of your history. Highly recommended.”

J. Pratt says “We had the previous version of this scale and loved it. So when they contacted me & asked if I wanted a free upgrade I was all about it! We’ve been using it for about a month now & so far it syncs great with no issues. Setup was easy and it integrates nicely with myfitnesspal, carb manager & of course the weight gurus app. I love how I can just step on it & it knows I am user 1 and records my info & then sends it to my phone (if I’m logged into the app). The customer service from this company is top-notch. They have great tutorials & troubleshooting just in case you have issues setting it up & you can even call or email them. The look of the scale is similar to the previous version, but the display is a little different. I love how it looks in our bathroom. I always find it amusing how guests feel drawn to the scale “just to see” what they weigh. We have received lots of compliments on this scale. I also think it is reasonably priced for what it does.”

I love how it automatically adds my health stats giving me that daily incentive for weight control! June 14, 2020 Follow-up. I continue to be extremely pleased with my Wyze scale! After showing my husband he’s hooked on it also, he especially likes the many body-tracking methods on this scale simply from standing on It. I’m also very pleased with the modern look it has, it doesn’t “look” like a bathroom scale!”

Rolli-Fit Smart Scale/Amazon.com

The app is easy to use with a simple design layout. It is automatically synced to your phone when it’s near and has Bluetooth on, otherwise, it stores a few of your sessions until you can sync it. I’ve been using it for over one month. Love to recommend this product.”
8. FitTrack Dara Smart BMI Digital Scale

FitTrack Dara Smart BMI Digital Scale/Amazon.com
This FitTrack Dara Smart BMI Digital Scale is truly a middle-ground smart scale when it comes to price versus bells and whistles. FitTrack measures 17 body metrics — including body mass index, muscle mass, and obesity levels — using two different frequencies for a higher level of accuracy. This scale connects via the FitTrack Pro app that can be used on both iOS and Android to track health from pro athletes all the way to infants. Allows for up to 8 individual users! This scale costs $89.95.
B. Goodrich says “This scale seems to be really accurate and looks great while it’s at it. There are a couple of things I learned setting up mine that I hope will helps others. 1. If you have carpet in the area where you want to use your scale, I highly recommend you get a board the same size as the scale to set it on. Otherwise, the feet of the scale mush into the carpet and make it look like you weigh less (20 pounds less in my case) While this is great for a confidence boost, it will be heartbreaking when you weigh somewhere else later. 2. I had some trouble getting the Bluetooth connected to my phone (and I think it was my fault) I went to Bluetooth and paired it with the scale before I downloaded the app or anything and then the app was having trouble seeing the scale. To fix this, I went to Bluetooth and disconnected the scale, and restarted my phone. Then I went to the app, it was immediately able to connect with the scale. The app calculates more information than just your weight. You can see all the things in my photos and also, each of those items expands out and gives an explanation of what it is. I recommend this scale if you’re serious about having a decent scale that tells you more than your weight and health.”
9. Arboleaf Smart Scale

Arboleaf Smart Scale/Amazon.com
This Arboleaf Smart Scale is all about a simplistic, sleek design without sacrificing the quality of the product. This scale provides a highly accurate reading of body composition using four high-precision G-sensors and four sensitive electrodes, all complete with a backlit LCD display. Arboleaf has integrated smart technology allowing smartphones to easily connect to your scale via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which will automatically update with your most recent weigh-ins. This scale reads for 14 body metrics and connects to popular fitness apps including Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit, and more. This scale costs $39.99.
K. Shah says “I have been exercising pretty regularly with “Camp Gladiator” and over the past couple of years I have invested quite a bit in fitness-related equipment. I have also done a couple of “CG Fit” sessions with camp gladiator where you take your body measurements (BMI, body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass, water %, etc) using the “In Body” machines at the beginning and end of a six-week challenge. I have paid over 80 bucks for 2 of these so I thought it’d be neat to invest in a smart scale at home where I can take these measurements from the comfort of my home and more regularly. There are many choices on Amazon so I decided to read a bunch of reviews and finally decided to buy this one. It came packaged well, nothing too fancy. Once you put in 4 AAA batteries (which are included) it turns on and stepping on gives you a weight measurement. You have to install their app to get all the other measurements and metrics delivered to your app. Once I did that I found that a lot of these metrics are very similar to the numbers I got recently (2 months ago) from the inbody test. the BMI was close but PBF (percent body fat) was quite off. SMM (skeletal muscle mass) was also close to the last number. Weight is pretty accurate. I’m not sure which one is right and what’s wrong but I have decided to continue using this at home and stay in one system and test regularly to see how I’m doing. I also got my other family members added to the scale and will measure their progress as well. Overall I’m happy with the functionality and ease of use of this scale.”
10. Etekcity Digital Weight Scale

Etekcity Digital Weight Scale/Amazon.com
This Etekcity Digital Weight Scale packs a punch for a super low price! At just under $20, the Etekcity scale is one of the most affordable without sacrificing too many bells and whistles. This scale provides a full body composition analysis including 13 essential measurements such as body weight, BMI, body fat, visceral fat, muscle mass, bone mass, and body water. Store each weigh-in data to your favorite app on your Android or iOS such as Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit, and Samsung Health. This scale costs $19.98.
Daniel says “First let me start by saying I am in the medical field. Some of these calculations cannot be correct, such as BMI, because it does not take into account bone mass etc. It does not have a way of doing so. So don’t let that get you down. Not every “measurement” is actually true, sometimes it is a guessed value to give you an approximated value. The best use of this scale is to measure your total weight. Works exactly as you should but if you have questions about more complex measurements, please talk to a doctor and do not rely on a scale you got from the internet. One thing that did surprise me about the scale was that it came with energizer batteries installed. Most things do not come with batteries. I hope the shipping companies know that. I’m not complaining though.”
