Many immigrants have stepped up on the frontline during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.  They have taken on countless roles, including roles as doctors, nurses, garbage disposal workers, and cashiers.  Recognizing their efforts, France has offered citizenship to 12,000 such workers.

France’s favorable treatment of immigrants comes in stark contrast to recent U.S. policies.  Former President Trump promoted notably anti-immigrant politics, from building a wall to undermining asylum and instating the notorious “Muslim Ban”—a ban that the Supreme Court upheld in Trump v. Hawaii.  Even now, President Biden has struggled to rollback all of the Trump administration policies.  Most recently, the Biden administration rescinded a Trump-era policy that requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims are adjudicated.  But a Texas Federal Judge found the recision unlawful, and the Supreme Court denied the Biden administration’s application to block the Judge’s order.

You can help stand up for immigrants by continuing to draw attention to France’s efforts and encouraging the Biden administration—and other countries—to follow suit.  Signing this petition is a good start.  We can all use to show some gratitude for people who have risked, and continue to risk, their lives to Support others.
