New Report Links High Fluoride Levels to Lower IQ in Children

A recent US government report is sparking discussions about the effects of fluoride on child intelligence. The National Toxicology Program’s analysis, based on studies from several countries, suggests that fluoride levels exceeding 1.5 milligrams per liter in drinking water may be associated with lower IQ scores in children. This is the first time a federal agency has acknowledged, with moderate confidence, a connection between high fluoride exposure and reduced cognitive function in kids.

Fluoride has been praised for its role in dental health, with its addition to drinking water seen as a major public health success. However, the report raises concerns about the potential neurological risks of elevated fluoride levels. Previous recommendations for fluoride in drinking water were as high as 1.2 milligrams per liter, but this was reduced to 0.7 milligrams per liter in 2015 to address dental fluorosis, a condition causing discoloration of the teeth.

The findings highlight that approximately 1.9 million Americans receive water with fluoride levels of 1.5 milligrams or higher, which the report identifies as a potential risk. While the report does not quantify the exact impact on IQ or address the effects on adults, it emphasizes the need for further research to understand the implications of fluoride exposure on brain development, especially in young children and pregnant women.
