Puppy Dies from Pneumonia After Drinking Water Too Quickly

Cute puppy drinking water from bowl. Drinking water too quickly may put dogs in danger of developing pneumonia.

In a heartbreaking video posted to TikTok by the account @stephandjuliaseden, two humans warn viewers about the dangers of letting dogs drink water too quickly. Steph and Julia live on a 10-acre homestead in Canada. Excited to share their home with a dog, they adopted Moose in June. The adorable St. Bernard puppy was described by his people as “the most perfect puppy” and loved living on the farm. In the video, he can be seen watching the farm’s chickens and playing with another dog. He can also be seen lounging around the house and enjoying pats and cuddles from his family. Steph and Julia loved Moose very much and were excited to share their lives with the St. Bernard. Unfortunately, Moose passed away unexpectedly at less than five months old.

After drinking water too quickly, Moose began coughing. However, he quickly recovered and returned to his normal self. That is until one day the pup woke up lethargic. He had a runny nose and was barely eating. Concerned, Steph and Julia rushed him to the emergency vet. There, they learned that Moose had Aspiration Pneumonia. The vet quickly tried to stabilize the pup by giving him IV fluids and trying to bring his fever down. Unfortunately, Moose’s pneumonia had spread quickly and it was too late for the young pup. Moose passed away despite the vet’s best efforts.

Aspiration Pneumonia develops when a dog inhales foreign material, such as water, into their lungs. Although they are not sure, his humans suspect that Moose may have developed the condition after drinking his water too quickly. Now, Steph and Julia want to warn other pet parents to be on the lookout for this condition. Symptoms include coughing or choking, lethargy, loss of appetite, nausea, or a runny nose. If a dog displays one or more of these symptoms it is important to seek veterinary care immediately. Julia also advises seeking veterinary care within 24 hours if you notice your puppy coughing or choking on their water or food as Aspirational Pneumonia is particularly deadly to puppies and senior dogs. However, it can affect dogs of any age.
