A new analysis reveals that the world’s richest 1% are having a devastating impact on the planet and exacerbating global crises like hunger and poverty. Oxfam‘s findings point to luxury lifestyles, investments in polluting sectors, and the use of private jets and yachts as primary drivers of this problem. These excessive carbon emissions are making it even harder to curb Global warming and remain within the 1.5°C limit.
If every person emitted carbon at the same rate as billionaires, the world would exhaust its remaining carbon budget in under two days. This stark contrast is highlighted as carbon emissions from the investments and consumption habits of the ultra-wealthy far outweigh those of average people. For instance, Oxfam reports that just 50 billionaires create more emissions in three hours than a typical British individual does over their entire life. Private jets, used frequently by the rich, produce carbon that the average person would emit over 300 years.
Oxfam has called for governments to take action. They are urging tax reforms to curb luxury emissions and generate funds for clean energy and climate crisis mitigation. The UK Treasury responded to these appeals by declining to comment on potential tax changes. Nevertheless, as Chiara Liguori, Oxfam’s senior climate adviser, emphasized, the emissions from the wealthiest aren’t just inequitable—they are deadly, worsening the climate and threatening vulnerable populations.
The report identifies investments as a significant contributor to the carbon footprint of the ultra-rich. The study suggests that if billionaires were to shift their money into low-carbon investments, their emissions could be dramatically reduced. Still, resistance persists from industries that profit from emissions, with many hiring lobbyists to oppose climate initiatives.
