Right before the beginning of 2020, Prince William announced an environmental prize to provide funding to those that help solve the environmental crisis. The Duke of Cambridge spoke about the multi-million pound prize, called the Earthshot Prize, on December 31.
Five winners a year will receive the prize, starting in 2021. The prize will end in 2030, by which point 50 solutions will have been found for the climate crisis.
Prince William said in a statement, “We face a stark choice: Either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve. The next ten years presents us with one of our greatest tests — a decade of change to repair the Earth.”
Sir David Attenborough, the nature broadcaster and environmentalist, narrated the video announcing the prize. In the video, he said, “The spirit of the Moonshot can guide us today as we confront the serious challenges we face on earth. This year Prince William and a global alliance launch the most prestigious Environment Prize in history … A global prize designed to motivate and inspire a new generation of thinkers, leaders and dreamers to think differently.”
Winners will also receive press recognition in addition to the funding. The prize is open to governments, businesses, and communities for work on environmental issues.
Prince William has spoken about the climate crisis before, on a visit to Pakistan. His brother, Prince Harry, and his father, Prince Charles, are also outspoken environmentalists.
The United Nation recently released a report warning countries about the dangers of climate change. They also urged people to reduce their dairy and meat intake by opting for more plant-based foods as one way to take climate action.
