The record-breaking bushfires in Australia are ravaging the country, destroying homes, taking lives, and killing wildlife. Over 1,000 homes were destroyed, over 24 lives have been lost, and approximately 32,400 square miles have burned. Up to 30 percent of the koala population has also sadly been lost. While summer fires are indeed common in Australia, the fires this summer have been record-breaking and climate change is making them worse. Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology has said: “Climate change is influencing the frequency and severity of dangerous bushfire conditions in Australia and other regions of the world.” However, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison refuses to take action against Climate change.
Despite the raging fires and the smoke covering much of the country, Morrison tells Australians that “there is no need to panic.” How can you tell people whose country is burning not to panic? The bushfires are worsening. Wildlife and people alike are suffering immensely.
He also insists that Australia’s policies on Climate change are perfectly fine and environmentally friendly. But Australia’s carbon emissions are among the highest per capita in the world. Coal is also big business in Australia. The emissions created by burning coal directly contribute to Climate change and Morrison, according to Technology Review, successfully ran on a pro-coal campaign. He’s also threatened climate activism.
Morrison may be anti-climate activism and pro-coal, but he needs to put his country first. People cannot keep losing their homes and lives and wildlife cannot keep suffering because he refuses to act on Climate change.
