The Transfarmation Project has unveiled its new demonstration hub in Wadesboro, North Carolina. Once a site dedicated to raising and killing over 500,000 chickens annually, this facility has been transformed into a state-of-the-art greenhouse. The ribbon-cutting event took place on September 6, 2024, celebrating a vision of farming that reduces environmental impact and supports former factory farmers in transitioning to specialty crops.
The project, led by property owners Tom and Sokchea Lim in partnership with the Transfarmation team, has converted a 15,000-square-foot poultry barn into a vegetable farm and research center. The new hub is focused on promoting sustainable agricultural practices, offering hope to other farmers looking to move away from factory farming.
By adopting specialty-crop farming, the hub demonstrates key environmental benefits, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved soil health, and more efficient water usage. These changes not only benefit the environment but also offer a financially viable alternative to traditional animal farming.
The hub serves multiple purposes, acting as a research center, a venue for public events, and a showcase for farmers interested in exploring alternatives to factory farming. Visitors will be able to see firsthand how farms can shift to more sustainable, environmentally friendly operations, growing crops like tomatoes, lettuce, berries, and mushrooms.
