The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has announced the formation of a Green Economy Advisory Council, to advance sustainable innovation and create significant economic opportunities for all New Yorkers. This newly established council brings together diverse stakeholders, including Environmental justice groups, industry leaders, and investors, all working toward a just transition to a clean energy future.
This initiative builds on Mayor Eric Adams‘ “PlaNYC: Getting Sustainability Done” and the city’s “Green Economy Action Plan,” which aims to triple the output of New York City’s green economy by 2040. A key part of the plan is to create more than 400,000 green-collar jobs, significantly expanding workforce opportunities in the emerging sustainable energy sector.
Mayor Adams highlighted the city’s ongoing progress, noting two major projects at Brooklyn Marine Terminal and South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, which are expected to generate billions of dollars in economic impact and create thousands of jobs. The Green Economy Advisory Council will play a pivotal role in ensuring that these projects and others continue to drive economic growth while addressing the urgent need for climate action.
The council is composed of leaders from various sectors, co-chaired by Amanda Kaminsky of Lendlease and Rudolph Wynter of National Grid NY. The members are tasked with providing strategic advice on implementing the city’s ambitious green economy goals, with a focus on critical areas such as clean energy infrastructure, climate technology, and workforce development.
The council’s work will ensure that New York City remains at the forefront of the global movement toward a sustainable and inclusive economy, offering new opportunities for innovation and growth while building resilience in the face of Climate change. Their first meeting is set to take place on September 12, 2024, with additional meetings planned throughout the year to guide the execution of the Green Economy Action Plan.
