Forced and Child Labor in the Green Energy Transition

A recent report by the U.S. Department of Labor highlights a pressing issue: forced and child labor may be linked to the production of key materials used in green technologies, such as electric vehicles and solar panels. As the world moves toward a cleaner energy future, the ethical implications of how these technologies are sourced come into focus.

The report identifies several minerals, such as cobalt, nickel, and lithium, as being extracted under exploitative conditions in countries like Congo, Indonesia, and China. These materials are essential for the energy transition, but their supply chains are often tainted by human rights violations, raising difficult questions about balancing environmental goals with ethical labor practices.

Experts stress the importance of supply chain transparency to address these concerns. However, tracing the origins of minerals once they enter global supply chains, particularly after refining processes in countries like China, is a significant challenge. The clean energy sector has been making efforts to trace and audit supply chains, but gaps remain.

The energy transition is expected to drastically increase demand for these minerals. For instance, lithium demand could rise by over 40 times by 2040, while cobalt and nickel are projected to see similar surges. Although the U.S. imports much of its minerals from countries like Canada and Norway, the global supply remains largely dependent on nations with poor labor practices.

There have been calls for solutions, including taxing materials extracted using unethical labor practices. However, such measures could have unintended consequences, such as exacerbating poverty in the affected regions. Experts agree that while these labor issues are serious, they should not deter the shift toward renewable energy, as Climate change continues to threaten millions of lives globally.
