Last year, the world experienced record-breaking heat, leaving scientists grappling with the causes. While the usual suspects—burning fossil fuels and the El Niño climate pattern—were major contributors, they didn’t fully explain the rapid rise in temperatures. A new study published in Science points to a surprising factor: clouds.
The research reveals that the disappearance of low-lying clouds over the oceans played a significant role in the warming. Fewer clouds mean more sunlight is absorbed by the Earth, as opposed to being reflected back into space. This process, known as “albedo,” describes how different surfaces reflect the sun’s energy. The Earth’s albedo has been decreasing since the 1970s, partly due to melting ice and snow, which expose darker land and water that absorb more heat.
The study, based on NASA satellite data and climate models, found that the decline in cloud cover was particularly noticeable in areas like the North Atlantic Ocean. This has led to record low albedo levels in recent years.
One of the reasons for the thinning of these clouds may be linked to changes in pollution. The reduction in shipping emissions, which were once helping to brighten clouds, is a double-edged sword. While this is a positive change for public health, it also contributes to warming by decreasing cloud cover.
Another factor is the changing climate itself. As global temperatures rise, low clouds, which thrive in cooler, moister air, are thinning or disappearing. This creates a feedback loop, where the loss of clouds accelerates warming, leading to even fewer clouds.
Helge Goessling, a climate physicist at the Alfred Wegener Institute, explains that this phenomenon could lead to even more intense warming in the future. “This is such a complex beast and so hard to disentangle,” Goessling said, noting that Global warming itself might be partially responsible for the cloud decline.
