Saved Within Seconds of Death, Russian Cat Ends Up Being Adopted by Local Environmental Minister

Black and white cat

When a worker at a waste-sorting plant in Russia saved a cat who was seconds away from death, he had no idea a government official would soon adopt him. The worker had noticed something soft in a plastic bag and took it off the conveyer belt to see what it was.

Surveillance footage soon went viral of the waste plant in Ulyanovsk, 435 miles southwest of Moscow. The video shows the worker, Mikhail Tukash, taking a white bag off the conveyer belt, cutting it open, and finding a black and white cat.

Tukash told a newspaper, Moskovsky Komsomolets,

“I felt something soft inside the bag. I cut the bag open slightly and I saw eyes looking back at me.” Tukash was honored by local authorities for his rescue.

The rescue video was broadcast on television and social media, and the black and white cat soon became a local celebrity. A Ulyanovsk environment minister adopted the cat.

The cat was examined by the local vet and has become a proud cabinet member. The furry friend was named the assistant to the regional environmental minister.

“The cat was on the brink of death,” said the ministry. “A little longer and it would have ended up in the trash separator.”

Pictures on the minister’s Instagram have shown the luxurious and relaxing life the cat is living now. He was be seen napping in a swivel chair in the office and exploring its new home.

“I want to appeal to pet owners: remember that you are responsible for those you have tamed,” Rakhmatulina said. “If you can’t keep your pet at home, you can always leave it in good hands or at a shelter.”
