It’s horrible to hear about animal abuse cases or read the ways humans are endangering many species. Fortunately, there are things we can do to speak for them. One of the ways we can help and lend our voices to good causes is by signing petitions. Such petitions are sent to people in powerful positions that can make a change, especially when they see just how many people stand behind the cause. We can demand change, justice, and stop tragedies by speaking up and doing our part.
There are horrifying things happening around the world every week like extinction, poaching, habitat loss, exploitation, and cruelty. If you are looking for a way to help animals, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week!
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Save the Pygmy Sloth From Extinction
There are only about 79 pygmy three-toed sloth on the Isla Escudo de Veraguas off mainland Panama. This island is their only habitat. They are at risk of extinction because of poaching and the destruction of the mangroves on the island. Sign this petition to urge the Panamanian government to work with the communities on the island use education and law enforcement to save the pygmy three-toed sloth!
2. Shut Down Phuket Zoo After Dumbo the Performing Baby Elephant Dies
Moving Animals shared Dumbo’s story with the world in April 2019, when they shared horrible videos of the skeletal baby elephant being forced to perform at Phuket Zoo in Thailand. People were outraged and the zoo was forced to seek veterinary treatment for the elephant and it was discovered that he had a digestive tract infection which gave him constant diarrhea and made him weak. However, Dumbo got stuck in a puddle of mud and his back legs snapped while trying to free himself. The zoo didn’t even notice for three days and when he was finally taken to an elephant hospital, he died just three days later. Sign this petition to demand that Phuket Zoo be shut down and to stand against cruel wildlife attractions!
3. Better Protection for Guards and Animals of Virunga National Park
The photo above of two caregivers at Senkwekwe Center in Virunga National Park with two female gorillas went viral! However, the park actually needs attention for another reason as well. The caregivers at this park help orphaned gorillas, like the two in the photo who were shot as just babies. However, the animals and people are in danger. In 2018, 5 rangers were killed in an ambush and over 130 rangers have died working there since 1996, and the animals are at risk of poaching. Sign this petition asking for a reevaluation of the park’s safety measures so that the guards and animals can all be protected.
4. The Asiatic Cheetah is Speeding Towards Extinction
Only about 50 Asiatic Cheetah remain in Iran, and they’re at risk of going extinct like the Asiatic lion and Caspian tiger did. In 2017, the United Nations stopped funding Asiatic cheetah conservation projects in Iran. The the Iranian government cut the budget as well and then went on to arrest some of the only conservationists studying the Asiatic cheetahs, accusing them of using camera traps to spy on the Iranian government. Sign this petition to ask Iran and the United Nations to rededicate funding to Asiatic cheetah research and conservation before they go extinct!
5. Support Bella’s Bill, Which Could Toughen New York’s Weak Animal Cruelty Laws
Bella was adopted by Michael Gallagher and his family as a puppy. In 2016, when she was 16 Gallagher tried to strangle her to death with a zip tie. When they didn’t work, he put her in a trash bag and beat her head with a shovel. Bella still survived but her injuries were so severe, she had to be euthanized. He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, but only got four months in jail, 5 years probation, and a 20-year ban on owning any other animals. The reason the punishment didn’t fit the crime is because animal cruelty is not a part of the penal code in New York. State Senator Andrew Lanza has introduced “Bella’s Bill” in order to move animal cruelty laws to the penal code and increase jail time for people convicted of animal abuse. If you support this bill, sign this petition!
6. Demand Federal Ban on Gassing Shelter Animals to Death
In Utah, Missouri, Ohio, and Wyoming unwanted shelter animals may be euthanized by being crammed into a gas chamber where they slowly asphyxiate in a painful death that can take an hour or more. If euthanasia is necessary, animal welfare experts agree that euthanasia by injection is more humane because it is fast and minimally traumatic. Sign this petition to ask Congress to ban the use of gas chambers in animal shelters across the entire country!
7. After 6 Years Together, Bonded Polar Bears Cranbeary and Lee Will Be Separated
Polar bears, like all wild animals, do not belong in captivity. However, Cranbeary and Lee have spent the past 6 years together at the Denver Zoo where they have bonded and become very close. But now they will not only be condemned to more time in captivity, but they’ll be separated from each other. The Denver Zoo plans to send Cranbeary to the Alaska Zoo and Lee to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio. To demand that they be sent to a sanctuary together, sign this petition!
8. This Woman Filmed Herself Abusing a Kitten Right in Front of Her Son
An unnamed woman was given a kitten by her friend Megan Smith because she said she really wanted her son to have a kitten. Smith thought she did a wonderful thing, but soon realized she made a terrible mistake. A video posted on snapchat showed the woman holding the kitten in her lap and suddenly picking the kitten up and flinging her across the room. The little kitten went flying and slammed into a door with a thud. Her son was there the whole time. Smith saw the video and demanded her kitten back. Thankfully the kitten is now safe. Sign this petition asking the Lancashire Police to investigate this case of animal cruelty.
9. Stopping Animal Abuse Can Help Prevent Domestic Violence
There is a strong correlation between animal abuse and human violence, especially violence against women. Abuse and cruelty to animals can be a warning sign and predicting factor for domestic violence and other forms of abuse. This means that in order to protect humans, especially women, animal cruelty should be taken more seriously. Sign this petition demanding that Congress pass legislation to curb the escalation of violence by animal abusers which can be done with methods like mandatory counseling or rehabilitation for offenders.
10. Shut Down This Puppy Mill That’s Dangerous for Dogs and People
In 2017, USDA inspectors found two emaciated dogs (one of which was nursing puppies), dogs very close to heating sources at risk of being burned, and nearly two dozen dogs in unsafe enclosures where their feet and legs could slip through wire flooring at Double G. Kennels. In 2018, a neglected chihuahua was found with nails so long that she couldn’t stand normally. Now in 2019, multiple cases have been reported of canine brucellosis, a chronic, incurable disease that can be transmitted to humans and is highly contagious among dogs. It can cause reproductive issues including infertility and stillbirths in females, and sperm abnormalities in males. Dogs that test positive for this disease are euthanized. The puppy mill is currently closed and under quarantine while the dogs are tested. Sign this petition to demand that this dangerous facility be shut down for good!
